Arts & Culture
We invest in arts and cultural organizations that contribute to a vibrant community.
Mrs. Evans loved the arts and served on the board of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for nearly a decade, gifting it a Salvador Dalí painting and a 17th century tapestry. She also gave a Tiffany glass window and church bells to St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bedford, Virginia in memory of her parents; funded the restoration of the historic Yorktown Custom House; and commissioned Atlanta architect Philip Schutze and master woodcarver H.J. Millard to design the Whitehead Memorial Room at Emory University Hospital. Upon her death, Mrs. Evans left her home’s treasured antiques, art and furnishings to Westminster Canterbury Richmond because she believed the senior residents should have beautiful things to affirm their value.
The Foundation continues to support arts and culture, which make up a significant part of our average grants portfolio (see chart). Investments focus on strengthening organizations in metro Atlanta with significant audiences and strong financial operations. We occasionally support projects outside Atlanta that promote community development in Georgia cities and have a broad base of support from local donors. We consider grants for institutions in Virginia only if they received support from Mrs. Evans.
We do not fund endowments, exhibits, festivals, films, individual artists, operating support, performances, publications, sponsorships or specific works of art.
