Education
We invest in education to expand opportunity and support community development.
Mrs. Evans’ family prized education and sacrificed to enroll her in private schools as a child. She became an ardent supporter of education, serving as Emory University’s first and only woman trustee from 1944 to 1953. She also served as a trustee of Agnes Scott College, received an honorary degree from Berry College, and named eight educational institutions among 14 beneficiary organizations in her will.
Education is the Foundation’s top priority and represents the largest part of our average grants portfolio (see chart). We focus on developing private colleges and universities in Georgia and also support health education, principally through the pediatric medical residency program conducted by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University.
We do not fund academic research, athletic facilities, endowments, public education, scholarships or student organizations. The Foundation has limited giving for independent schools to those that have received past support. We consider grants for institutions in Virginia only if they received support from Mrs. Evans.
